It never occurred to me, that I could make conference exciting for my kids. Probably because one is three and one is six months. And when I was a kid, unless conference weekend fell on Easter, we didn't get a treat or anything, we just sat around and listened to it on the radio with dad, or watched it on TV. But I do remember that we watched it and that I always liked it.
Well, I was watching "Mormon Times" that comes on TV after the choir every Sunday morning. They always have great ideas and stories on there. They were talking about keeping kids interested in conference. They had several good ideas all of which were too advanced for my three year old. Then at the end they showed a conference basket. You put pictures of the 12 Apostles and the First Presidency on little cheap treats and things like that and when they give their talk, the child can have the treat. Genius! I thought. I knew Jade would love that and It would be a good way to help her start recognizing faces and names and also maybe get her a little excited about it.
Well, I was right. She LOVED it! It was a great thing to get her into conference a little bit. She understood the rules and the basket lasted for the whole two days. She also recognized some of the faces when they came on because she had studied them so hard. It also taught her a lesson that I did not expect. Delayed gratification. She wasn't allowed to open or play with the treats and toys until the person actually gave their talk. We only had one temper tantrum which was really good in my opinion and it was totally worth it in teaching her that lesson. Also, the cost was only about $12 and totally worth it. Most of it was from the dollar store and then a few food things. I think we might do it again. We'll see.
